Four pieces by the York potter Jerry Harper were acquired to develop the WA Ismay collection, as was his wish. The acquisition of a group of nine family portraits of the Cholmeley Family of Brandsby by John Sell Cotman was generously funded by the Friends of York Art Gallery. A seasonal acquisition was made by the social history department - two boxes of unused Christmas crackers dating from 1945-50, complete with X-rays of the contents! A significant collection of Royal Navy memorabilia dating from 1922-48, belonging to Yorkshire man John Willey, was donated. The collection of just under 400 items included uniform, personal naval items, documents, photographs, medals and souvenirs. |
